The fact is, that we are all now living in the computer age and it seems that everything we do is effected by this fact. Labor management is no exception to this rule and as a result new technologies are now available to help to streamline labor management systems, no matter what the business is.

Throughout our history, it has been one chronicle after the other of success. The boundless frontier, westward expansion of the railroads, factories exploiting the assembly line technique, exports to the entire world, and an endless array of technology to fuel it all. But all of a sudden we are scared. We are not been able to grasp success as firmly. Losing your house or your job is no longer: “Oh well, it happens to someone else”. It is happening to our friends and relatives.

All this makes us wonder really what was the secret ingredient to our success and how can we recaptured it and make it work again. Let us start by eliminating what is not the primary ingredient.

Diversity, tolerance, an optimistic way of life, and freedom, are worthy qualities, but they are not the primary moving force. They are the end product of having economic success. Without stable economics, that would quickly be lost and we would be at each other’s throat.

The free enterprise system is certainly our backbone, but without robust markets, there is nothing to compete in.

Our enormous productivity in which goods and services pump out day in and day out is noteworthy, but our trade deficit seems to increase each year with buying more and more overseas.

We have a well established financial community in which capital used to flow very free freely, until the recent crisis. But if there is nothing to invest in, that does little good.

We have one of the best standards of living, as well as exemplary workers’ rights and benefits, but if you don’t have a factory, you cannot call everybody back to work. So what is it?

We are absolutely nothing economically without new and novel technology. Otherwise, we are just selling uneventful goods and services to ourselves. We pioneered the personal computer and software industry because we thought outside the box. And, benefited greatly economically. But if other countries come up with the next new and dramatic technological idea, we will disappear into a second world country. Frankly, the world will no longer need us. We will be copying everybody else. And I don’t mean jumping on the bandwagon after someone else came up with the idea. I am talking about the first person to come up with the idea and to put it in practice.

In the next few decades, real economic power will come to the country who seizes the next dramatic technology for alternative energy, biotechnology, new forms of transportation, novel communication systems, genetic engineering, etc. Do I need to go on?

So how is this done? Continuing to be a world power will be directly dependent on funding our small businesses and their novel ideas. That means more and more business loans, especially guaranteed SBA loans, my specialty.

One of my clients the other day recounted he was at a small public meeting in which the young Bill Gates was soliciting investors for his new business. It was in a small conference room at a hotel in northern California with about twenty people in the audience. He was pitching his ideas like any other starving entrepreneur. All he needed was the money. He remembers he was a great salesperson. We know he got the capital he needed because we know the rest of the story.

It’s time our Federal government places more emphasis on capital infusion to small businesses that have emerging and creative ideas. I listen to them on daily basis. As a bonus, many of them are involved in alternative energy. For goodness sakes, you could take a measly $1 billion from the economic stimulus budget and give a million dollars to 1,000 of them. Many come timidly requesting only $200,000, give or take. Can you imagine what they could do with five times their budget? And how fast they could develop their prototypes and get to market? The fact is that during a real emergency most people are completely focused on saving their family member and themselves and many times don’t have the time to use the telephone.

Older style security systems all required that a person run to a panel and type in a code as soon as they entered the home but with new security technology a system can now be activated and deactivated with a small clicker that fits on a key chain just like the clicker that operates the alarm system on a car.
